Of what feat wives are capable to get out husbands?
Gugo Grotsy, the person who was once shining in many medieval European capitals, the founder of international law was born on April 10, 1583. But what he made, “ Flying Dutchman “ still is the author of one of the most smart escapes from prison. However, this merit with Gugo the beloved wife Maria and seven children can quite divide him.
But about everything one after another. Gugo was one of the last children in ancient and dear prosperous family which lived in the Dutch town of Delft. Parents did not feel sorry for means for education of the inquisitive little boy. Surprisingly Gugo himself very much reached for knowledge. At seven-year age he mastered Latin, and in eight-year-old wrote the first poems in this difficult language. But also it was not the most surprising. House teachers advised parents somewhat quicker to send the teenager to university. So, Gugo in 11 - summer age with gloss passed examinations and became the student of Leiden university. And, it arrived on two faculties at once - classical literature (as a hobby) and philosophical (at the father`s insistance).
The turn to be surprised to teachers came. Gugo seized all literally on the fly, and, having graduated from the university for incomplete four years, he at the age of 15 years was appointed the assistant to the Dutch ambassador in France. In the memoirs the king of France of that time Henry IV did not stint a praise to young talent, having called it “ by the Dutch miracle “.
Relay was picked up by Orleans university which a year when by Gugo it was hardly executed 16 later, awarded his degrees of the Doctor of Law. However, at that time the young talent let know that law not its fad. However, his translations of some mathematical and astronomical compositions of classical writers and three Latin tragedies which are well met at court testify to that period in Gugo`s life.
Having wandered on “ to the abroad “ Grotsy returned to Holland where at one time fulfilled duties of the historiographer of the Dutch republic, and then was appointed to an important post of the general treasurer of provinces Holland, Zealand and Frislandiya. A bit later it became pensionariy in city council of Rotterdam. By the way, pensionariya is one of the highest officials in states of the provinces of the Netherlands. Something like the speaker.
By then Grotsy already managed to marry Maria van Regersberg, the daughter of the burgomaster of the city Vera, and did favorite thing of grandees of that time - addition in family. In any case, Maria was very prolific and presented to the husband of 7 children.
An era was very inconsistent, and Gugo “ put not on that horse “. Trying to reconcile orthodox Calvinists and Protestants - dissidents, it appeared between two fires. And when to a victory, eventually, the commander and military reformer Moritz Oranski very few people doubted that Gugo Grotsy will be executed came. But the governor showed unprecedented generosity, having replaced execution with life imprisonment in fortress Lyovensteyn. Moreover, it made a mistake, having allowed the prisoner to use books.
Three years later, in 1621, Maria together with children arrived to fortress to visit the husband. From the carriage they dragged out a big chest and explained to security guards that as eyes from continuous reading began to hurt Gugo, they will take away all its books home.
Protection did not object. Also passed this pass the Gipsy camp together with a chest directly in a chamber. And then Gugo got into this chest. It was showered with books and taken out from a jail. Protection was too trustful. Soldiers slightly opened a chest, were convinced that in it, really, there are books, and waved a hand supposedly leave!
After that the family went straight in … France. Here Grotsy with big honors the king Louis XIII who granted to the fugitive meets not only a political asylum, but also an opportunity to do favorite thing - writing. 4 years later in Paris there is its well-known treatise “ About the right of war and peace “. The work Gugo right there drew disgrace from the papal yard. Vatican brought this work in the Index of the forbidden books.
In 1631, having waited for 6 years after death of the sworn enemy Moritz Oranski, Gugo comes to Rotterdam. But here are obviously not glad to it and it is taken under protection by the Swedish crown. The great Dutch spent the life rest in numerous moving between Sweden and the Netherlands, having served several years the ambassador of Sweden in Paris.
In one of such returns of Sweden, the ship by which Gugo Grotsy floated was wrecked at coast of Germany. Gugo escaped, was placed in a city hospital of Rostock. But bathing in cold water did not do good - two days later one of founders of international law died.
And years later history wholly measured to it honors. So, only by 1775 the treatise “ About the right of war and peace “ it was published 77 times in Latin, the Dutch, French, German, English and Spanish languages.
And what Maria? It was faithful to the husband up to the end …
