Why it is useful to know meters, or “ It could not Yamba from a trochee... “
For us great Pushkin`s complaints seem strange on the fact that Onegin could not distinguish yamb from a trochee, despite all efforts of his friends in any way. In the 19th century, probably, it was difficult to find the person who would not distinguish such simple meters in society and did not write verses, at least in youth at all. At any lady of high society and not only, the album to which admirers of her beauty wrote different quality and property the verses composed by an impromptu because each of them surely studied in lyceum, a gymnasium or at university poetics secrets was of high society.
Now it is optional to ladies to write verses. Why then Yamba`s nobility and trochees to distinguish them from each other and still from three other meters?
There is a variety of reasons on which it is useful to know meters.
The first - same, as well as at the time of Pushkin: to be pleasant to the ladylove or just to tempt. It is possible to outline also to the gentleman couple of lines. Suddenly will help?
The second - it is possible to flash the knowledge in the company. For example, the song " sounds; Out of an access zone we are not identified. Out of an access zone quite consciously … “. And you ask attendees: “ You know what size wrote this text? “. Who will be able to answer this question to a descent in your company? Most likely, anybody, except you.
The third - if at you is children, sooner or later they at lessons of literature will study meters, in a class 5 - 6 - m, or even earlier. Perhaps what will not be understood. Naturally, will address you. And you to them lay out everything that learned from this article.
The fourth - suddenly at you is talent, and you also do not know about it. Really and the ingenious poet for all mankind will die?
The fifth - it is possible to earn if to begin to write poetic texts for songs. If you listen to a pop-music, then already noticed that to do it not and it is difficult, - the main thing, to know meters which create a rhythm.
Well, and now we will pass directly to meters. Main sizes only five: two disyllabic and three trisyllabic. Disyllabic consist of two syllables, trisyllabic - of three.
Simpler - disyllabic. It, as in Pushkin`s line, yamb and a trochee. They differ from each other in the fact that the accent in these sizes falls on different syllables: at one - on even, at another - on odd.
If the accent falls on even syllables, then it is YaMB. Let`s remember school poems.
Frost and sun. Day is wonderful.
STILL you doze, the friend charming.
For bigger sketchiness it is possible to replace an unaccented syllable with a sign - and shock +. Vertical line (/) will separate each couple of shock and unaccented syllables. Will look here is how brought lines higher.
- + / - + / - + / - + / -
- + / - + / - + / - + / -
Turns out that this poem is written by a tetrameter yamb.
In the TROCHEE on the contrary - the accent falls on odd syllables. Again Pushkin.
Drilling a haze the sky covers, + - / + - / + - / + - blizzards twisting
… + - / + - / - - / + This example shows to
all genius of the poet who even the size is capable to represent a storm.
In general, it is considered that yamb is quieter, light, song size. Ancient Greeks wrote yamby satirical verses, and divided poetry into two sorts - heroic and iambic. The most favourite size of our poets is considered tetrameter yamb. “ Out of an access zone … “ by the way, too yamb.
“ Trochee “ from Greek it is literally translated as “ dance tune “. To this word words chorus and a round dance will be single-root.
There is still a set of kinds of these two simple sizes: choriamb, lame yamb or holiyamb, yambo - a trochee or antispast. But it to the nonspecialist already the nobility is optional.
