How the Egyptian gods treated thieves? Cats, mice and grain...
In the fifth millennium B.C. in Egypt agriculture blossoming began - Egyptians learned to grow up grain crops. Boggy valleys of Nile were drained, the woods and groves along it were cut down, the whole network of irrigation canals, dams, dams was built. The special service watching weather predicted floods, made special agricultural calendars.
Agriculture was a major activity of Egyptians, and grain - the main richness of Ancient Egypt. Invention of a plow (IV millennium BC) raised possibilities of farmers even more.
Egyptians filled up a harvest to huge tower-shaped granaries which were made of a brick or the hardened silt. Granaries from above from where grain was filled up, had strong gates, the same strong gates were from below from where at need grain was got. The harvest was carefully measured and considered by special copyists, it was strictly protected.
But despite all security measures, from well protected towers - storages the considerable part of grain vanished. Mouse-like small rodents - mice whom neither stone walls, nor gates could stop were the reason for that.
These rodents became parasites of the person, despite it long ago, Egyptians understood not at once what occurs in their granaries. Land owners saw mice, but first did not even represent what harm these little animals can do. One mouse eats about three grams of grain a day. However house mice under favorable conditions can breed all the year round, have annually up to ten dung and bring every time on 6 - 8 little mice. And already at monthly age of a mouse are capable to give posterity.
Theoretically the issue of one couple within a year can be estimated in tens of millions of individuals. Egyptians of it did not know. Mice long live near the person, without finding themselves. Rodents have zamechatelyy ability - reproduction self-regulation: at a big congestion of individuals they increase adrenal glands and the special hormone which is slowing down reproduction is emitted. But if rodents become a little, adrenal glands decrease again and reproduction happens normally. This property helps rodents to avoid an overpopulation and death for hunger, and at the same time helps them to join the ranks in a short space of time.
Egyptians sought to make the granaries inaccessible for mice, but they did not manage it, and here then the important place in life of Egyptians, and also in a pantheon of their gods the cat was high on the list. People began to idolize cats for the invaluable benefit brought by them. They were just overfed, the grown fat and grown lazy cats and cats lay in a mansion, the majority of them ceased to catch mice and lost hunting instincts. But all - cats were that barrier which prevented mice to destroy the main richness of Ancient Egypt.
In a classical antiquity of a mouse brought many sufferings to people too, there for fight against them in houses kept manual udavchik, caresses, the ermines exterminating these small wreckers.
Greeks sacrificed to Apollo (in their opinion, he had the power over rodents) gold mice, hoping that their god will appease gluttonous beings, but Apollo was powerless.
