Princess Eudoxia Vyazemskaya: what forced it to dramatize own death and to go to the monastery?
Are in the village of Kolyupanovo of Aleksinsky district of the Tula province a well. Near the river Ocky which a streamlet flows on a ravine bottom blessed Eufrosinia dug out a well and all patient who came to it for the help, spoke: “From my well take water - you will be healthy“.
Who such grows old Eufrosinia who lived 100 years (there is a version that longer), whose name is still fanned by legends? It is necessary to tell that life of this woman is interesting and surprising.
Eufrosinia (a real name - Eudoxia Grigoryevna Vyazemskaya), the orthodox devotee, belonged to a family of princes Vyazma (its younger branch). She almost told nothing about the life, thereby drawing attention to herself. In 1862 in one of magazines article about blessed Eufrosinia was placed. The spiritual mentor Eufrosinia P. Prosperov wrote it. Later the biography about it was made by I. M. Surikov. So it was succeeded to slightly open some secrets of her life.
It is supposed that Eudoxia Vyazemskaya was born in 1758. There is its surname among the first graduates of Educational society of noble maidens (later - Smolny institute).
The beautiful and educated princess was invited by Catherine II to the palace. Having become the maid of honor and communicating with representatives of society, Eudoxia Vyazemskaya, nevertheless, constantly missed. Life at court seemed to it sleepy and monotonous. And once with two other maids of honor Eudoxia decides to run forever from the palace. In one of evenings, having used that the empress had a rest in Tsarskoye Selo, girls left the dresses on the bank of a pond that they were counted as the drowned, and in clothes of peasants went to wander. However still there is a legend that Eudoxia was looked for, returned to the palace that Ekaterina long talked to the princess until that admitted to it that she wants to devote herself to service to god.
In the first years of the wandering Eudoxia went on different monasteries, did not refuse even the most “black“ work. Some interpreters of its biography consider that the princess tested herself for “durability“, seeking to overcome in themselves human weaknesses. Only ten years later Eudoxia returned to Moscow to meet the metropolitan Platon. It is known also that, having listened to the unusual visitor, having been surprised to her extensive knowledge and talents, it together with the letter sent the girl under a name of Eufrosinia to the Serpukhov Episcopal monastery.
In this place Eufrosinia carried out for many years, practically in a privacy. She lived not in the monastery, and in a small izba. Lived submissively and simply. In its izba there were always animals - cats, dogs, hens. Many of nuns were surprised to it. On what Eufrosinia grows old answered that “this smell is more pleasant to her, it replaces with her spirits which it used at court“. in the Summer Eufrosinia put on a shirt from a heavy cloth, from above - a cape, and in the winter over a shirt - a sheepskin coat. She spent days in prayers. And in free time walked in the woods and picked berries, mushrooms, various herbs from which prepared medicines for patients whose flow did not run low to a staritsa at all seasons of the year.
The new mother superior took a dislike to “strange“ Eufrosinia, among nuns gossips and slanders against a staritsa spread. Without having endured offenses, humiliations, Eufrosinia decided to leave this place. Having left the monastery, she moves to the village of Kolyupanovo which is located on the bank of the river of Oka.
There is a version that Eufrosinia arrived to Kolyupanovo at the request of N. A landowner. Protopopova who met her in the Episcopal monastery more than once. For the devotee Eufrosinia the landowner near the estate constructed a small lodge in hope that that will be happy with it. But grows old began to live in the room where the domestics of the hostess settled down.
The message about Eufrosinia`s stay in Kolyupanovo was quickly carried on local the district. To it applicants whom it accepted without any payment for the help often came. As before, she prayed, engaged in collecting of herbs much, occasionally traveled, studying new places.
There was no blessed Eufrosinia 3 (on July 15), 1855. A body of a staritsa buried under a floor of wooden church of the Kazan Mother of God. It is known that Eufrosinia was honored by Marina Tsvetaeva`s sister, Anastasia who learned about her life, being in exile. After the release Anastasia Tsvetaeva very often went to Kolyupanovo, to Eufrosinia`s source.
In the years of revolutionary revolution the temple was plundered, then the smithy, a farmyard and a shoe workshop settled down there. But memory of Eufrosinia`s staritsa lived in the people. Locals told that Eufrosinia dreamed of that on the place of her burial the convent was constructed. And in 90 - e years of last century on the place of the former temple it was built new, and also the convent is built. Eufrosinia (in the world - Maria Kushnir) became the first nun of monastery, and then and her mother superior.
In 1988 Eufrosinia grows old it was ranked as a face of the Tula Saints. Annually on July 16 in Kolyupanovo there take place the celebrations devoted to a staritsa. Where once there was a source dug by Eufrosinia now the chapel is constructed, there is a swimming bath. It is necessary to tell, as after blessed Eufrosinia`s death the flow of people to these holy sites did not decrease.
