What does disappearance of magnolias threaten the world with?

in China are remarkable Summer blossoming of magnolias. Majestic evergreen trees with glossy leaves grow along sidewalks. On the ends of branches as on a throne, white cup-shaped flowers one by one settle down, exhaling a delightful fragrance. The small bushes of garden hybrids covered in the pink, red or lilac flowers create colourful landscapes among modern buildings. When you inhale aroma of these truly of mystical flowers, the world seems more brightly and is lighter.

And still is what to worry about. According to messages of the British organization FFI (Corporation of financing of the industry), there is a danger of disappearance of a half of wild Chinese magnolias. In America where in the North and the South since ancient times these trees grew, the same picture is observed. In Colombia, for example, threat of disappearance expects more than 30 versions. Some copies growing in vicinities of the Chinese temples have age of 800 years. Still popular wild magnolia - a source of wood, the food and medicine for local communities.

A magnolia - one their most popular plants in Asia, Korea, Japan and America. In the world is available its about 80 various versions which come from east America and Hugo - east Asia. More than a half of them are cultivated around the world. Hundreds of hybrids are grown up by selectors, frost-resistant grades, kinds of magnolias for small gardens are removed.

Magnolia history is interesting. Scientists of institute of food and agricultural sciences from Florida found fossils of magnolias to which from 38 to 58 million years. This unique tree came to us from Ice Age while many ancient woods died. The magnolia arose much earlier bees therefore only bugs could pollinate it. The carpel of a flower developed so strong that on it bugs easily could creep, without damaging structure.

In Asia, since 7th century, the magnolia was specially grown up in gardens of temples. Ancient Chinese called a magnolia the Jade Orchid for endurance. It embodied a purity symbol. Beautiful plants with brilliant leaves and huge flowers were used for the decorative and medicinal purposes. Some species of magnolias were appreciated medicinal properties of bark which helped at cough, cold and fever. In Japan the magnolia was parted in pots.

In 1703 the botanist Charles Ploumie found the beautiful blossoming tree on the island of Martinique and called a flower of “Manyoliya“ in honor of the French botanist 17 - go centuries of Pierre Maniol. Before the plant was known as “talama“, however the name “magnolia“ finally got accustomed. William Sherard used this word for the description of a tree in the book “Systema Naturae“ in 1735, thereby fixed the name finally.

In South America the magnolia was known still to Aztecs. In 1731 it was presented in Europe and quickly became popular of - for solar evergreen foliage, a graceful form and fragrant large flowers. The cucumber magnolia was appreciated strong wood of which natives of America made a canoe and boats. Later the American pioneers applied a cucumber magnolia to construction of houses and production of furniture. This look received such peculiar name for the fact that the unripe fruit at it reminds a cucumber.

The magnolia in America is known as the South symbol. After large-scale elections in November, 1900 the magnolia was chosen as the state flower of the State of Mississippi, and later as the state tree. Officially it was declared in 1952. The State of Louisiana chose a magnolia as the flower from too - for abundances of these plants in its flora.

The magnolia has very unusual root system - unlike the majority of trees and bushes, roots its powerful and thick, settle down generally superficially. For this reason the magnolia is more hardy, than other trees. It can be replaced safely after it reaches the big size. It is required only to a thicket to water that roots remained crude during the first season after change. The magnolia is steady against wreckers and many diseases.

Flowers of a magnolia do not produce nectar, but they contain a large amount of pollen. Pollen has the high content of protein, and bugs use it for food. Fruits of a magnolia remind a wood cone, are by the form similar to cones of coniferous trees. The structure of a fruit changed for millions of years a little. Inside the seeds covered with a red fleshy peel on which birds like to regale ripen. All parts of a plant contain essential oil, and seeds are a good power source for birds.

Disappearance of a wild kind of a magnolia threatens not only loss of a genetic variety of this family, but also and the fact that with its disappearance we will lose the highly sensitive indicator wellbeing of the woods and ecology of our planet. According to scientists, it is necessary to protect these unusual trees and to restore their habitat, and otherwise the tragedy is inevitable.

In 2007 on 3 - the m the Global Botanical Congress of Gardens to Wuhan (one of the largest cities and the economic centers of China) developed strategy of preservation of a magnolia. And now the Chinese universities, botanical gardens and government agencies conduct the strengthened work on preservation of the Chinese magnolias. Let`s hope that the British and Chinese experts will be able to rescue this wonderful tree of the world.
