Brown and gray. From where the symbolics of these flowers takes sources?

Shades very strongly influence “nature“ of brown color. The reddish shade does it “warm“, greenish - “cold“, beige - “gentle“.

The Russian word “brown“ is connected with well all known is red - brown spice - cinnamon which was received, crushing bark of a tropical tree cinnamomum. Actually, “cinnamon“ is and is diminutive derivative of the word “bark“.

Color of bark, wood, dry or faded vegetation, sand, the soil made brown one of the most widespread flowers of the Wednesday surrounding us. And our skin in different degree bears in itself this shade, thanks to a pigment to melanin (it is actively developed during suntan). Ancient Egyptians highly appreciated brown color, connected it with the soil, and considered the dark skin very beautiful.

In Europe the similar esthetics was not divided at first. This “dirty“ color was considered ugly and vile. Wore gray and brown clothes generally low lyud - therefore these colors became a symbol of poverty and poverty. Brown connected with dirt, sewage, ashes, a decay, withering.

The relation to brown in Europe began to change when the new social class - the bourgeoisie stepped on the world stage. Early bourgeoises appreciated such qualities as moderation and a practicality. In their clothes, as if in peak to bright dresses of noblemen, nonspottable and not striking brown color even more often appeared. In the 16th century it even becomes fashionable, and gradually epithets “solid“, “quiet“, “sure“ are assigned to brown. Together with gray brown becomes primary color of a men`s suit - the same uniform urged not to distract solid people from work.

However, in combination with a certain material brown could become also color of luxury - if it is suede, a velvet or skin.

Many merits of brown are connected also with the fact that it is color of wood which constantly surrounded the person in dwellings. It both walls of log huts, and furniture, and heat-insulated wooden floor. Not without reason a brown environment and a background at many is associated with a cosiness, comfort, safety, heat. You should not forget also about pleasant associations with bread and pies.

At the same time prevalence brown in the nature has also other party - in large numbers it can strongly bore.

In 1930 - x years this color gets one more negative symbolics, being associated with fascism. Brown shirts of the German attack planes - nazis from SA became the reason for that. It is necessary to tell that the similar uniform did not testify to any special thirst of fascists for brown at all. Ram who was simply heading attack planes found a set of unused shirts of that color in military warehouses and put them on use. Since then expression “Fascism“ became invariable to contact fascism.

Scientists refer this color to achromatic, that is, to colourless flowers. And though expression “colourless colors“ sounds paradoxically, actually pure achromatic colors - concept ideal. In reality we always observe them with this or that share of foreign “color“ impurity.

Here and gray - ideally define as transitional color from black to white though it can include also a color shade (for example, blue).

The intermediate position gives gray neutral character. The symbolics of this color quite often coincides with symbolics of brown. Gray clothes, as well as brown, in Europe first did not love, but gradually she became a symbol of efficiency, conservatism, modesty, humility (we will remember “mouse“ suits of officials, gray cassocks of monks, or an attire of the wizard Gandalf the Grey from “Lord of the Rings“).

As well as brown, gray it is widespread in the nature. It is color of a stone and metal, thunderclouds and a veil of fog, color of shadows and the approaching twilight, color of dust, ashes and gray hair.

As well as brown, gray can bore very quickly. Not without reason he became a symbol of monotony, a timeserving, plainness, banality (“gray weight“, “dullness“, “a gray mouse“). The masking and imperceptible lines gray also generated the expression “The gray cardinal“ meaning the person very influential, but hidden from eyes publics.

The abundance gray usually casts “cloudy“ mood - melancholy, grief, melancholy, a hopelessness. Especially there is a lot of this color in the cities where the stone and asphalt dominates.

A. Blok:

“The street rose, gray it is full,

Was interweaved by a web yarn …“
At everything at the same time neutrality of gray can render to

also the calming stabilizing effect.

In general “nature“ of color very strongly depends not only on its shade, but also and on a source or the carrier of this color. So in the late Renaissance gray velvet, brocade and the atlas began to be considered fashionable and beautiful. Strongly ennobled gray color and its communication with “noble“ silver. And the interior in style “find fault-flew“ in general cannot be presented without the poured metal shades.
