Vincent van Gogh. Why recognition and glory came to the artist in many years after death?
the Destiny was cruel, having released the artist of only 10 years of active creative life, but also this short term was enough that Vincent van Gogh turned into the original master with an original manner of painting. Unfortunately, recognition its one of the best-known Dutch painters happened in many years after tragic death of the artist.
Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in a small small village the Grotto - Zyundert in the south of the Netherlands in a family of the Protestant pastor. The boy since the childhood differed in difficult character, later the artist remembered: “My childhood was gloomy, cold and empty“. Parents tried to give to children (except Vincent in a family there were two more sons and three daughters) a good education. Some time with Vincent and his sister specially employed governess was engaged. Then the boy was sent to a boarding school which he threw in 1868, though showed progress in studying of separate objects, including foreign languages.
Future artist was fond of drawing even in the years of school study, but then he also did not assume that painting will become his calling. In 1869 it began to work in the major trading company specializing in sale of works of arts. During this period he excitedly visited the museums and art galleries, studied works of many artists, began to understand painting, got acquainted with beginners and already famous artists.
Vincent van Gogh`s dealership not only carried away some time, but also gave decent earnings. But in the middle of 70 - x years he practically threw affairs and was fond of religion. It is natural that from firm he was dismissed. For Vincent there came the period of search of a course of life. He tried the forces in teaching activity, short time was the assistant to the pastor, read sermons, was engaged in missionary work in the miner`s area in the south of Belgium and even seriously prepared for revenues to theological faculty of university in Amsterdam.
Approximately in 1880 at Vincent van Gogh the desire to devote the life of painting ripened, having become the professional artist. Understanding that for this purpose it is not enough school course of drawing, he began to attend classes in Academy of Arts in Brussels. Took lessons from the artist Anton Mauve who had to him the distant relative, was engaged in self-education much, tried forces in painting by oil, trying to grope the style in art.
It is curious that practically at once it undertakes not only landscapes and etudes, but also the conversations representing life of simple people - miners, peasants, weavers, general workers, urban poor. Works of this period are, as a rule, written in the dark tones emphasizing a sad and difficult life of those who are represented on a cloth by the artist.
The picture “Eaters of Potatoes“ which the artist presented to spectators is considered the best work of this period. Unfortunately, responses of critics were generally negative, at best - neutral. It is natural that the artist endured this relative failure, but did not lower a hand, and began to work even more.
The new period of his creative life began at the end of 1885. At first Vincent for several months goes to Antwerp where he fills defects in portrait painting, attending classes in Academy of Arts. Then for two years goes to Paris where continues training in skill in studio of the talented French artist Fernan Cormon, in parallel continuing to experiment with color, a form, technology of painting.
The Parisian period is interesting also what at this time Van Gogh wrote the nearly 30 self-portraits. It was not narcissism, just the artist had no money to employ models, here and it was necessary to write himself. Art life of Paris where these years the impressionism gained strength, captured the young artist. It meets young painters, as well as it looking for new ways in painting. Perhaps, he during this period became with Henri Toulouz most very intimate - Lautrec and Paul Signac.
Not without influence of new acquaintances and under impression of impressionism color of works of the artist strikingly changes. Now on them rich, bright colors prevail. But the public of interest in Vincent van Gogh`s works does not show. If he also hears good reviews of the pictures, then only from creativity fellows and few friends.
Without having gained recognitions in Paris, Vincent in February, 1888 goes on the South of France to the small town of Arles located on banks of the river of Rhone. Here in works of the artist the main place is taken by a landscape, the benefit, the bright southern nature was so conformable to his creativity.
Vincent seeks to create in Arles a colony of artists, relatives to it on spirit. He even equips for this purpose the house, having decorated its rooms with the works including which became subsequently the well-known still lifes with sunflowers. Some time stays with it Paul Gaugin, but between artists there are several quarrels. During one of them Vincent even in rage cuts off to himself an ear lobe.
Unfortunately, in Arles the artist instead of a peace of mind which to it is so necessary receives permanent frustration of mentality and is even hospitalized. Epilepsy which is found at it by doctors is added to a depression. In April, 1889 attacks of an illness become aggravated and Vincent van Gogh agrees to continue treatment in clinic for the insane in Seong - Remy. He does not stop work also here, transferring everything that surrounds it to a canvas and paper, studies engravings and reproductions of works of old masters, copies their pictures, but in a manner peculiar to it. In intervals between exacerbations of an illness when it can work outside clinic, Vincent writes the wonderful, filled with light landscapes.
In May, 1890 Vincent van Gogh moves to the village of Over chosen by artists - on - Oise, located near Paris. It seems that the illness released it, it much and fruitfully works, admiring the local nature. In the letter he enthusiastically writes the brother Teo: “This place of surprising beauty, the real village with unique lines and very picturesque“.
It would seem, everything develops well, the artist is a lot of and excitedly works and the public at last begins to show though small interest in his pictures. But the illness does not recede. Minutes of a depression Vincent van Gogh decides to commit suicide not to be a burden for a family and the brother Teo who in every possible way supports him. On July 27, 1890 the artist shoots to himself at a breast from the revolver. The wound was deadly, and in two days Vincent who was only thirty seven years old, dies on hands at the brother Teo. Buried Vincent van Gogh on a local cemetery. Later near it will rebury also his beloved brother Teo who endured Vincent for only six months.
After death of the artist Teo undertook care of his picturesque heritage. He decided to organize exhibitions of works of the brother and in every possible way to propagandize his creativity. Unfortunately, he practically managed to make nothing. After Teo`s death, his widow of Joann (Ioann) undertook care of art heritage of Vincent van Gogh. Other relatives of interest in works of the artist did not show and practically all works of Vincent transferred to Joanna.
Exactly thanks to Joanna exhibitions of works of Vincent van Gogh began to take place in the world, his letters, albums of reproductions were published. Interest in works of the painter promptly grew. Joanna could achieve that by the time of her death in 1925 Vincent was already extremely popular.
After the end of World War II at last also the authorities of Holland became interested in creativity of the famous fellow countryman. A large number of works of Vincent van Gogh was redeemed from successors of the artist and collectors. It was decided to create in Amsterdam the big museum of the artist. Its construction began in 1963 with direct participation of the nephew of the painter, the son Joanna who became the engineer.
Vincent van Gogh`s museum in Amsterdam was open in 1973, but finally its construction came to the end only in 1999 when the exhibition complex was attached. Now here the biggest collection of works of the painter - more than 200 pictures, more than 500 drawings and about 700 letters of the artist is collected. Here works of many famous painters - van Gogh`s contemporaries are presented, the big hall is allocated to engravings.
In usual days the museum works from 10 to 18 o`clock, and on Fridays its work is prolonged till 22 o`clock. Vincent van Gogh`s museum became extremely popular for a long time, in it practically there are always turns.
One more large collection of works of the artist is in a big museum complex in the territory of National park Hove - Velyuva whom from Amsterdam it is possible to reach in 2 - 2,5 hours.
