And whether it is necessary to teach the child to music? Whether
to Teach the child to read and write whether to teach it to algebra, to chemistry, history, at last, whether to teach it to jump through “goat“ - all these questions usually does not arise in a family: they are solved by society centrally and it seems irrevocably. And here in the major for development of the child a question of whether he will get music education in what volume and what quality, the full freedom of choice is left.
And the decision is made by the parents who are a little prepared for it independently, in each case individually and, unfortunately, it is often wrong. Everything depends on a measure of understanding of consequences of this decision for all future spiritual life of their children. Alas, in many cases the measure of understanding is low.
Of course, happens so that musical education and education of any child are prevented by circumstances. But much more often people, besides people stir the closest for it. Disturb from - for lack of information, from - for prejudices, the settled delusions, sharply speaking, disturb on ignorance and bad manners.
I was convinced long ago that, depending on the relation to musical education of children, parents are subdivided into five categories.
The first category , the most numerous, are those people who do not want to undertake excess efforts and to potter with musical training. The typical phrase which at the same time is said sounds so: “My son (daughter) has Van Gogh`s ear for music“. It is meant as not deafness, but absence of so-called “musical“ hearing at all. And with this concept of ear for music one of the silliest and hardly uneradicable prejudices is connected.
Actually there is no “musical“ hearing as there is, say, no “literary“ sight on which would depend, to train or not to train children in reading and the letter. Teachers speak about ear for music when mean degree of a fitness of the sound distinctive skills necessary for achievement of certain levels of musical professionalism. At the same time it is again - not about that, there is an ear for music or it is absent, and about in what degree it is developed by education and training. Therefore to apply this concept before training moreover in relation to all children (even to those who are not going to become professional musicians) absolutely senselessly.
Hearing as potential ability to perceive music and to play music at the amateur level, all normal children have (an exception only deaf-mutes from the birth make, maybe). Coming back to the characteristic of the first category of parents (who expostulate on a bear), we have to understand that in this case the parent just also is that “bear“ who steps on an ear to own child and detains his musical (so, and the general) development.
The second category are parents who recognize from belief that their child is by nature talented. And for all that that they, as a rule, noncritically concern the child and are inclined to terrible exaggerations, has to tell that in the main thing such parents are absolutely right. Their children have sufficient abilities for training in music. In all cases. (The best musical teachers adhere to the same belief. Tell what legendary Pyotr Stolyarsky, David`s teacher of Oystrakh, happened, having listened to beginners, told them to parents so: “Ah, anything special, ordinary ingenious child“.)
Just as not to find any healthy child who could not teach to be read and written you will not find also such healthy child who could not at the correct training master competent playing music (reading and record of notes, reproduction by their voice and on a musical instrument).
I can be objected that not all children trained at music schools tolerably seized it. Yes, it so, and reasons here two. In - the first, too late beginning of training (and 7 - 8 years are already late!) in - the second, incorrect methods of training. The diploma manages to train all children, even the most careless, and music basics (fluent reading notes) - not all. You represent that it has to be for “the miracle - a technique“ that the child learned to read and did not learn?!
However we will talk about sure methods of training in other chapter. For now I emphasize that for such category of the parents who are intuitively knowing that their children are child prodigies I also write this cycle of articles. However, and parents from the previous category if they manage “to banish a bear“, learn from these notes as it is better, more rational to create conditions for musical development of their children.
The third category - the parents movable by vanity. They begin to train children in music for reasons of prestige, feeling of haughtiness and other low motives (up to envy). Among these people is even such who are deeply indifferent to art, are inclined to speak scornfully of music as, at best, about empty occupation, but, nevertheless, seek “to buy“ music education that he “was not worse than others“ for the offspring. It is that case when not the highest motives and not the most just purposes paradoxically push the person in a right direction. (Though has to notice in brackets that for the teacher work with the child of such parents and in particular communication with these parents - a hard case.)
The fourth category - extremists. Having suspected once that their child is not fated to become the great actor, they in a temper decide that they any music education in that case in general to anything, - and stop teaching children to music. In combination with laziness of the child such situations often are hopeless. Especially annoyingly happens then when over the years the child has a desire to play music or there is even an overdue disclosure of remarkable talents. But the train already left: the possibilities of musical development missed in the early childhood never to make up.
And, at last, fifth category . That ideal case when people do not hurry with premature conclusions about power of talent of the children, and quietly and deliberately treat musical training as to part of the general education, necessary for all. They are not inclined to exaggerate or diminish value of music and therefore for the teacher interaction with such parents - the best option.
Unfortunately, parents of this category presently (from - for the general of the low level of pedagogical culture in society) you will meet extremely seldom. But there`s nothing to be done, the ideal, as we know, happens only ideally...
