Why burn Maslenitsa?
this year the bright national holiday Maslenitsa fall on the period from February 23 to March 1.
By tradition in seven weeks prior to Easter there comes time to say goodbye to winter. Warms the sun, snow thaws, the nature comes to life - approach of spring is noted pancakes and festivities for a long time.
Maslenitsa is a festive border between winter and in the spring, and usually according to a calendar it is necessary for the end of February - the beginning of March. The matter is that Pancake Week - a moveable feast.
Entered a church calendar as cheese week, Maslenitsa is counted from Easter and precedes the beginning of the Lent. In the ancient time Maslenitsa depended on days of a spring solstice. The church did not begin to contradict national traditions and on the eve of the long period of abstention even believers are allowed to eat nourishingly and festively. In honor of at last looked out from - for clouds of the sun bake fat pancakes, do small rolls - larks. Rich pancakes with honey and sour cream yes with hot tea - looney tasty thing, especially from a frost!
Why not to spend days off cheerfully and brightly? To bring together the family or friends and to go to festivities which are traditionally held these days on central squares of the city. The spring shines bright colors, cheerful Maslenitsa rustles with different games, the whole week in houses and cafes can be eaten oil pancakes with various stuffings and without. The day before - it is a high time to quicken, stock up with flour, new recipes and good mood waiting for spring vanity and guests.
To drive on a hill, to do a bit of traveling in sledge, to play snowballs, to poperetyagivat a rope, to jump in bags, to resemble on stilts, to loaf about in cockfights, to pometat sticks during snow on range, and cardboard pancakes in boxes on accuracy - the sea of simple entertainments in the fresh air easily will lighten you mood!
But the brightest event of any holiday of Maslenitsa, its culmination burning of an effigy of Maslenitsa is considered. In the childhood surprised me why Maslenitsa has to be at the same time and very beautiful and very terrible and at the same time also ridiculous.
It is clear, that the effigy is a symbol of cold and difficult winter therefore saying goodbye to it, the people rejoiced to the fact that all grieves, sorrows and offenses of last winter are burned to ashes. On the other hand, same there was Maslenitsa effigy - the ruddy portly woman, a symbol of spring satiety and wellbeing who treats all with fat and tasty pancakes. Obvious contradiction.
But if to remember holiday history, then this dvulikost of an image will become clear. Maslenitsa in ancient times was perceived as a peculiar agricultural new year. And if to consider burning of an effigy in this context, then the sense of a ceremony consists in expression of idea of eternal updating. In a fire on which the effigy was burned usually threw out also old things that all bad remained in the past, and dispelled ashes, took away the remained straw on fields as a sign of providing a good harvest.
Revival of life, its updating through death, natural recurrence of dying and revival - reminds old custom of it. Cold - hunger and prosperity, melancholy and impetuous fun, inaction and a hard work - life is created from contradictions which infinite change is thought up by the nature. Not without reason in some areas in the last day of Maslenitsa burned and the remained pancakes - after a big ferial holiday there came the Lent.
And in day of a big national holiday of Maslenitsa it is possible to join ancient popular wisdom too - to throw out old and unnecessary and to think, looking at fire, treasured desires. To arrange a cheerful family holiday, there will quite be enough ordinary old broom.
