What are necessary to you charms?
If so happened that the Old Russian girl suddenly appeared in the present and met on the street the modern girl, then having seen what jewelry carries today, strongly would be surprised. Here such could take place between them dialogue:
- You have very strange charms in ears and on fingers. What they preserve you against and protect?
- It do not preserve, just ornament, - our interlocutor would answer with astonishment.
- Just jewelry? What advantage from them? Why it is necessary to carry the beautiful, but not preserving bagatelles?
Really, in ancient Russia practically nobody wore useless jewelry - neither men, nor the woman. Rings, ear rings, brooches, a beads, were first of all the charms intended to protect their owners from thin.
Life of ancient people was penetrated by gratitude to the mother - the nature for a sunlight, for a good harvest, for warm fire, for peaceful life, for healthy children, for happiness in the house. People idolized all natural phenomena, trusted in the mythical beings living everywhere and worshipped gods: To Rod, Yarilo, Svyatogor, Perun, Lada and many other. There were at life of people also evil spirits, and so charms were urged to protect from them, from trouble and rage human.
In Russia charms were produced by the special person from priestly estate. Previously the charm should be filled “ silushka “ for this purpose it was washed in a spring or enclosed around the sacred place, or rubbed in it the native earth.
Carried charms at a belt, on shoulders, on a breast at heart, on hands. There were many various charms, and everyone had the certain value. For example, the charm in the form of ring with suspension brackets in the form of duck pads had to protect hands from damages.
Charms shared on man`s and female, but there were also the general. the hatchet and a knife which were the exact copy of the real objects is an example of purely man`s charm. These small bagatelles protected the man on hunting and in peaceful work.
Charms of women were the various small figures representing household goods - spoons, buckets, combs. Now we call such bagatelles souvenirs, lovely knickknacks. And then they were urged to protect the house from misfortunes, attracting wealth and wellbeing.
Charms in the form of keys appeared a little later, in the X-XII century when locks were invented. These charms protected their owner from thieves and robbers.
The metal hoop which was carried on a neck was an interesting charm. Ancient people considered it as a reliable barrier which is capable to prevent soul to leave a body. This hoop - a charm was called hryvnia . Hryvnias carried both men, and the woman. They were considered as a sign of a certain situation in society. For rich people of hryvnia were made their precious metals - gold and silver. They were carried not only by Slavs, but also the East people.
Slavs had certain symbols which were represented on charms and had concrete appointment:
The sun - a symbol of good, pleasure, light.
The moon was a fertility symbol.
The broom - preserved against the evil entering the house.
Len - removed a malefice.
Bread - a prosperity symbol in the house.
Grain - the world, a harmony in a family.
A braid or a wreath - a sort continuity symbol.
This symbolics was widely used also in embroidery which was called oberezhny. An embroidery embroidered men`s and women`s clothing on a collar, sleeves and a hem of a dress.
Written on paper, a tree, birch bark, metal and plots and prayers, wearable at themselves were charms too. Those who went to the distant countries or to war put on the sacks filled with the native earth a neck. The same sacks filled with an incense were called ladanka .
Produced charms from various materials. The tree was the strongest, but also the most complex material . To trees people always treated as living beings, with special love and awe. It now we know that trees have the medical force and salutary energy, thanks to the scientific facts, and then people simply felt it because there was a strong link to the nature, than not each person can brag today.
The master, to make a good charm, at first talked to material, tried to feel power, choosing, this tree will be suitable for this person or not.
Each tree had the certain appointment. The charms made of a birch protected family happiness. The willow was used for protection of health. Was considered that it udesyateryat the vital strength of the person. The pine promoted restoration of vital energy, helped to return to the person self-confidence and the forces.
Clay, ceramics, gold, silver, copper were other materials which used for production of charms of a bone of animals. Copper was most often used in women`s jewelry. We and now with pleasure carry bracelets from copper, knowing that it possesses medicinal properties, it was known since ancient times.
Presently to charms people treat more as souvenirs, but it is possible to try to make a charm for the purpose of protection. And suddenly it will turn out? On the one hand, it will be just the fairy tale, we do not believe in ancient Gods and in their force long ago, but on the other hand, we believe in a force of nature, that it is capable to help the person and to protect him. Therefore it is possible to try to make preserved for the loved one (by rules, for itself preserved it is impossible to do ).
It can be, for example, usual the wooden doll made of a tree in the Russian national traditions - without nose, a mouth and eyes. Such polenets which can be decorated with straws or pebbles. The main thing governed - to do with love, sincerely believing in what you do. Such charm can serve for a raising of good mood that in itself is strong protection.
Our ancestors sincerely believed in charm force, that it is capable to protect the person from trouble in this huge world. Perhaps and to us it is worth trying?
