Where conducted ancient karavanny tracks? Petra, the city of crypts
Many forgotten cities, in deserts or in the jungle, in the twentieth century “ returned “ to mankind, stunning with the improbability. The city from rocks, called a stone (Latin petra ), - a striking example of such revival.
Not any person will go to Jordan. Even to see the monument entered by UNESCO in the list of the world cultural heritage - the city to Pyotr. But those who have a rest in Egypt especially in Charm - ale - the Sheikh, have a fine opportunity there to reach (either the plane, or the bus - the ferry - the bus). Petra costs both time, and road inconveniences.
The monumental city located at the height more than 900 meters above sea level and which is cut down in rocks, surrounded with the desert... Whether this wonder of the world? Once the capital of Edom (already then Petra was famous for textiles, ceramics and works on metal), then the capital of the Nabateysky kingdom (a nabatea - the nomadic Arab tribe), at the same time transit point between the East and the West - Petra is a continuous monument under the open sky, a monument of different times and the people.
The city prehistoric times as the English poet Dean Burgon figuratively noticed is dated: “ It is red - the pink city younger only than time “. And here its blossoming fell on the beginning of our era. After idumeev there were samate, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, at last, crusaders.
Petra`s inhabitants were probably the most successful businessmen from tourism. The payment for housing, a forage for camels and, actually, gifts for all living was raised from the coming caravan (security guards, attendants of the temple, the tsar`s servants). And caravaneers did not stint in an anticipation of profit on sale of spices.
But as soon as karavanny roads were displaced (Romans mastered maritime routes on the East), the former glory of Petra slowly came to naught, the city came to desolation and was left by inhabitants. But, fortunately, from it there were not only ruins.
The majestic Treasury - perhaps, the most well remained monument - too is cut from the huge rock. On it there is a huge ballot box from a stone in which jewels were allegedly stored. All facade of the building is speckled by hollows from bullets of bedouins who hoped to get hold of wealth, but it is vain. (Here, by the way, the movie about Indiana Jones and the last campaign of crusaders was shot).
The monastery at rock top which is cut down in the rock - Ad - Deyr - in the Byzantine times served as Christian church. A facade of this grandiose monument of stone-cutters - 50 meters in width and 45 meters in height.
And also the Mausoleum Ale - Hazne (Treasury), the theater constructed in hundred years B.C. and accomodating 3000 viewers, the Palace - Nadgrobye, the Palace of winged lions, the Triumphal arch, the Lock of the Daughter of the Pharaoh, Sakhridzh (Dzhinnova of a block), Obeliskovaya a tomb, Gore of sacrifices - hundreds in different degree of the remained monuments. And each of them is a riddle: how it was possible to design and to manually create all this stunning magnificence? Even the water supply system, habitual for us, in Pyotr turned into the most difficult hydraulic system allowing to keep each droplet of water.
In steep rocks which in itself are very beautiful and at different light are painted in various shades of red color, not only temples and premises are cut. Strikes quantity (several hundreds) of sepulchral crypts which pitted all neighboring rocks. What there was inside - already nobody knows, but their attractiveness remains: there is no person who would not stick the curious nose in ancient tombs. Many of them have names: Royal crypts, the Korinfyaesky tomb, but no certificates on that to whom exactly names concern remained.
The legendary city mislaid in sand was rediscovered for Europeans by Swiss Johann Ludwig Burkhardt who incognito, under a name the sheikh Ibrahim ibn Abdalla, traveled with big adventures and risk for life around the Middle East. Its destiny is unique, but it is a few other history.
