Svyatogorsk is located in only 160 kilometers from Donetsk, but impression such as if you get to other country. Not without reason journalists christened this place “ Donetsk Switzerland “. Here the unusual landscape and a unique microclimate, summer proceeds a month longer, but seldom happens hot, always just warmly, and day and night. Besides Svyatogorsk - most “ green “ the city in Ukraine because the greatest number of green plantings is the share of each inhabitant here.
In Soviet period the town was resort, and now it is about turning Svyatogorsk into the fashionable and prestigious international resort. And since 1997 the city and lands around it are declared by National natural park.
The most, perhaps, distinctive place of park are the Sacred mountains towering over the Seversky Donets. It is difficult to present, but 70 million years ago there was a sea at the bottom of which layers of a white chalk were formed. Perhaps because it is simpler to dig out cretaceous deposits, the Byzantine monks also lodged on this mountain, having built in it caves. The first written mention of Sacred mountains is dated the 15th century. Then this district was border between Russia and the Crimean khanate, and Sacred mountains at that time were both the cave monastery, and a border outpost. For all history of existence of the monastery it could be won only once - Turks.
In the local historical museum it is possible to see how Sacred mountains when the monastery was located in caves looked. In those days in it there lived 30 novices and monks. Till today about 1000 meters of underground labyrinths remained. But since the 17th century the monastery begins to build also on a mountain surface. Already then on white rocks there is a Nikolaev church built by unknown masters. The most popular legend of Svyatogorya is connected with it. As though the church was built secretly, then undermined part of the rock and in the morning the temple unexpectedly opened on the top of the mountain at night. To parishioners declared about a miracle supposedly the temple grew for one night. However there passed a little time and Catherine II issued the decree according to which the part of monasteries should have been closed, and their property was transferred to the state. The monastery on the Sacred mountains also was included in this list.
Catherine II the Svyatogorsky monastery and lands presented to the prince Potemkin, but the prince in a year died and did not manage to enjoy a magnificent gift. After his successors built the palace here and equipped swimming baths. The most important that they returned to the monastery the earth and in every possible way promoted its further construction. From the very beginning the cathedral was planned to be made rather big, however geological conditions of it did not allow. Nevertheless, the temple was built the whole 10 years. Its most important rarity - a wonder-working icon Svyatogorskaya to whom thousands of pilgrims come.
In the 19th century the monastery on the Sacred mountains prospered, here it was accepted to open doors for all who asked a shelter, and each wanderer received a shelter and food. But for it it had to bring the contribution for the benefit of monastery if not money, then any work. Over time for travelers in the territory of the monastery constructed hotel complex where except rooms for accommodation were tea, refectory and women`s hospital. At various times Chekhov, Kuprin, Bunin, Tsvetaeva, Gorky stayed at this hotel.
At the beginning of 20 - x years Bolsheviks closed the monastery, and in its territory the rest house appeared. Then many icons, lists and a unique altar of work of the Moscow masters were destroyed. All monastery was plundered, and many constructions are destroyed. For example, on the rock there was rare beauty Transfiguration Cathedral, it was sorted on building materials for construction of inhabited cases. But all the same the image the Saint of monastery haunted new owners and they decided to construct something special that by all means would be above domes of the ancient monastery. The rock about the monastery was for this purpose chosen. The monument to the Bolshevik Artem has height the whole 22 meters and 800 tons weigh. The enormous concrete statue of the revolutionary in cubistic style was executed by Ivan Kavaleridze. Artem was really lifted above the monastery, however the territory where it costs, now is rather observation deck, and people come here that from the mountain once again to look at a unique landscape of white mountains where already many centuries there is a Sacred monastery.
