How we perceive the senior and younger children?
a Big role in development of the person is played by family education, development conditions. But being even brought up in one family, children sometimes grow up very different. Means, position of the child in a family exerts impact on it.
In consciousness of each person exists “ cogitative picture “ senior and younger child, “ set of images of memory “ which correspond to them. At the same time it is important to note that these stereotypic ideas of the senior and younger child exert a great influence on the identity of the person who is senior or younger. Really, we, parents, absolutely differently treat the seniors and younger children, we wait from them for different things. Is it worth being surprised to that how various they grow up?
To reveal the stereotypic ideas of the senior and younger children concerning their typical behavior, character and appearance at Novosibirsk pedagogical university special research in which more than one hundred people participated was conducted. Four groups of representations turned out: seniors about younger, seniors about seniors, younger about seniors, younger about younger.
Summarizing these researches it is possible to tell the following:
Typical appearance . The senior children are described (both group of seniors, and group of younger) as high, and younger as small, low. Perhaps, it is connected with the fact that during physiological growth the senior child is higher than younger. The elder brother (sister) - accurate and harmonous, and group of seniors notes in younger carelessness. Quality of force is noted both at younger, and at the senior children. The group of younger notes at itself carelessness and an ulybchivost. At the description of appearance eyes (color) - a sign of beauty, proximity, hair - beauty sign are often characterized.
Typical behavior . The senior - works, learns, cares, helps, advises. Younger the help and councils are most important for group. Thus, the senior carries out functions of the adult. At the description of behavior of the younger child most often and in group younger, and in group of seniors the verbs " meet; plays “ “ studies “ and verbs of active behavior (runs, jumps, jumps). The group of seniors considers that younger clash much whereas younger about themselves it is not told. Perhaps, younger perceive such behavior as independence upholding, and seniors as revolt, the conflict.
Typical character . Group of younger, describing the senior, puts tranquility on the first place. Perhaps, it is connected with perception of the senior as adult, contrary to the active, children`s behavior. At the senior the qualities important for activity (responsibility, judiciousness, commitment, gravity), and " are also noted; parental qualities “ (severity, justice, kindness). At the description of character of the younger child the group younger on the first place puts the characteristic “ cheerful “. The description of younger is filled with emotional characteristics (cheerful, whimsical, thoughtless, sociable, quick-tempered). Younger note at themselves flexibility and mind whereas seniors consider them thoughtless and dependent.
So, the elder brother (sister) is presented high, big and harmonous. It possesses characteristics of the adult: skilled, responsible, judicious. Its activity is often connected with the management (learns, brings up, helps), more focused on others.
The younger brother (sister) is presented small, low. It possesses characteristics of the child: whimsical, curious, cheerful, dependent. Its activity is directed to entertainments, emotional interaction (plays, walks, communicates, has fun, cares for the emotional atmosphere), is more focused on own pleasure. Due to more expressed children`s position younger often it is necessary to prove the independence that the senior should not do practically.
Growing, people all the same remain senior or younger. Agree that honor each of us can easily klassifirovat most of the acquaintances on the basis of a seniority in a parental family.]
