How mummification in Ancient Egypt was made?

Mummification of bodies of the dead was applied by many people. However Egyptian mummies were most widely known, having become along with pyramids one of the first symbols occurring to the person at the mention of ancient Egypt.

According to religious representations of Ancient Egypt preservation of all components of the human being is necessary for revival in afterlife. If the body of the person is lost, then the spirit will eternally be in its searches. To keep a body there were for centuries fulfilled rules - mummifying ceremonies.

In the beginning mummification was the privilege only of Pharaohs, but eventually extended to all people, and even to the sacred animals living at temples.

There were several ways of embalming. They differed actually with cost.

We can imagine this process on Herodotus`s records.

At first they take through nostrils an iron hook a brain. Delete with this way only part of a brain, other part - by injection of the dissolving medicines. Then do by a sharp efipsky stone a section in a groin and clear all abdominal cavity of interiors. Having cleaned an abdominal cavity and washout by its palm wine, masters then again clean it the pounded aromas. At last, fill a belly with the pure pounded Myrrha, a cassia and other aromas (except an incense) and again sew up. After that the body for 70 days is put in natrovy chinks. More than 70 days, however, it is impossible to leave a body in lye. After it 70 - day term, having washed a body, twist with a bandage from the vissonny cloth cut on tapes and smear with gum (it is used instead of glue). (Herodotus, 2. 86) It is the most expensive way.

Cheaper: By means of a tube for washing inject cedar oil into an abdominal cavity of the dead man, without cutting, however, a groin and without taking interiors. Inject oil through back pass and then, having stopped up it that oil did not follow, put a body in natrovy chinks on a certain number of days. In the last day let out the oil which is earlier poured there from intestines. Oil works so strongly that decomposes a stomach and interiors which leave together with oil. Natrovy of chinks decomposes meat so from the dead man remain only skin and bone. (Herodotus, 2. 87)

I, at last, a way for poor people: In an abdominal cavity pour in juice of a radish and then put a body in natrovy chinks for 70 days. After that the body is returned to the family (Herodotus, 2. 88).

the Bodies taken from bodies were not thrown out, and were washed out, and then shipped in special vessels with balm - kanopa, stored in a tomb.

Thanks to the fact that all were mummified actually in Egypt by the end of its ancient history there were many mummies. And here so far remained it is possible to tell only a few units. Except banal robbers the quantity of mummies in the Middle Ages was very strongly reduced - their pitches with which they became impregnated began to use in medicine]
