What is Vseslav Charodey famous for?
In 1001 to a throne of the Polotsk principality there ascended Brachislav Izyaslavovich. Long Brachislav reigned, won victories and suffered a defeat, but stood in competition to Kiev and managed to lay the foundation for the strong state. Died in 1044 and gave way to the son, Vseslav, legendary Charodey whose reigning lasted till 1101. Hundred years the father with the son governed. Unique example from the Slavic Middle Ages.
Vseslav in 1029 was born. The birth of a knyazhich was the fanned secret and magic. Chronicles claim that mother gave birth to him “ from a volkhovaniye “. The mark of heavenly forces on the child`s head - a birthmark turned out to be consequence of fortunetelling. Veshchuna apprehended the press of the highest forces with awe and advised mother to hide a sign from public eyes a bandage which the son had to carry to the death.
Contemporaries believed that one sign business did not manage. Considered that the highest forces awarded Vseslav not only prophetic soul, but also gave ability to turn into a gray wolf, a clear falcon or round with gold horns.
Already during lifetime about Vseslav Charodey put the legends which gradually regenerated in national bylinas about Volkh Vseslavovich, the wise sovereign, the courageous soldier, the son of the princess and a fierce Dragon, the winner of the Indian tsar. According to some historians, Vseslav`s feats found reflection and in numerous legends on Ilya Muromtsa.
Carrying out will of magicians the prince never removed bandages from the head. Explain with the mysterious sign of the chronicle hidden under it Vseslav`s bloodthirstiness, constant readiness to enter war. However, despite such characteristics, it should be noted that the most part of reigning was peace, though enemy blood the prince managed to spill much.
Two decades were possible to live in the world with the Kiev princes Yaroslav the Wise and his son Izyaslav, helping Kiev to reflect attacks of nomads. The well-known St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk was constructed these peace years.
Sofia Vseslav`s Saint erected the temple in aspiration to prove that Polotsk is not worse than Kiev and Novgorod. In a majestic construction not only prayed, but also accepted ambassadors, stored princely property and based by the grandfather Izyaslav, Rogneda and Vladimir`s son, library. Chronicles of the Polotsk monks, hand-written in St. Sophia Cathedral, were “ are live “ in the 18th century.
Peaceful life of the principality ended in 1065 when Vseslav undertook a campaign to Pskov, took Novgorod and removed bells from the Novgorod Sofia. This campaign laid the foundation to long series of wars in which sieges were replaced by campaigns, and defeats by victories. Vseslav visited in captivity, reigned in Kiev, but, eventually, returned to native Polotsk.
At the time of Vseslav Charodey`s government the krivichsky state reached tops of the power. In the capital there lived about 10 thousand people. But, except Polotsk, the principality included 16 more cities, two of which - Minsk (Mensk) and Vilnius (Krivich - the city) - are known presently as the capitals of the independent states.
Lands subject to Polotsk in the West stretched to the Baltic (Varangian) Sea. Princely vassals ruled the cities located in the territory of present Latvia. Foreign policy influence of Vseslav Charodey was so big that the Byzantine emperor Alexey Komnin took the daughter of the prince in the wife.
The terrestrial way of Vseslav ended in 1101. Except the daughter, at the prince was six more sons. The uniform strong hand was not any more, and the state was divided into specific possession of brothers Vseslavovichey.
The monolithic, rich and powerful Polotsk principality practically ceased to exist suddenly. The century period of strengthening and blossoming of the first state on the Belarusian lands was replaced by an era of interstine contentions.]
