2G and 3G - enemies or friends?

It is no secret that now there is an active construction of networks of cellular communication of the third generation. In our country - it is mainly UMTS standard networks. They allow to provide to subscribers the wide list of new services: the video call, stream video, determination of location, network games, high-speed access to the Internet (do14,4 Mbit/sec.), etc.

would Seem that days of the GSM networks are considered and in the near future phones of this standard can be found only in the museum. However you should not hurry with conclusions. It is possible to tell with confidence that 2G still long time will function. It is caused by several factors:

1. Wide circulation of networks of the standard 2G. Already functioning networks are the main source of profit for operators and bring in the quite good income. It is natural that nobody will refuse them until the worthy alternative appears.

2. The number of the subscriber devices supporting the UMTS standard from total number is not so big. Still the majority of the sold telephone sets support only the GSM standard and, having refused networks 2G, the operator will at once lose the most part of the subscribers.

3. The GSM networks provide a wide range of services habitual to subscribers: voice connections, SMS, MMS, conference communication, voice mail and mn. other. Such set of services quite suits many subscribers, and use of the new standard and, therefore, purchase of new phone has no for them what sense.

Then arises a question: why operators do huge capital investments in construction of new networks if the GSM networks can still bring benefit to the owner and satisfy (though to a lesser extent, than 3G) subscriber demand. The answer consists in desire of mobile operators to increase a share of the income from so-called additional services to which, just and data transmission belongs. This titbit does not allow to sleep peacefully to the leading players of the market of cellular communication long ago. The technologies of data transmission existing in the GSM standard such as GPRS and EDGE do not satisfy the current subscriber inquiries on speed (to 384 kbps), and the UMTS networks with support of the HSDPA technology give the chance of Internet access at a speed up to 14,4 Mbit/sec. It is comparable to such wire technologies as ADSL, FTTB, Ethernet. Thus, cellular communication can compete with dedicated access to the Internet on quality of services, and it promises not the small income for operators which can be comparable to the income from the main services (voice transfer).

So all - what will be coexistence of GSM and UMTS in the future? First of all it will be good-neighbourhood. Some operators initially build 3G network especially for data transmission, forbidding in them voice calls, a SMS broadcast, etc., allowing only access to the Internet. Thus, valuable resources of a new network for the most significant direction are saved. At the same time networks 2G unload due to outflow of Internet users. Over time, networks of the second and third generations will coexist as equals. The subscriber will be able to choose the used network depending on the requirements and opportunities of phone. to Tell

when a conclusion of the GSM networks from operation for the present early begins. The matter is that it is often more favorable to operate an unprofitable network as dismantle of the telecommunication equipment demands large sums. Therefore, at least, some more years nobody will think of switching off the GSM network to please to new generation. So early still to get rid of the GSM phone, but it is already worth choosing new - the UMTS device.
