How to use methods of medical diagnostics for painting of

Polish scientific (Piotr Targowski) suggested to use a computer tomography for research of a state and authenticity of rare painting.

Before you very interesting and useful results especially for art critics and experts of the museums:

Scientists from Poland describe a technical way how to use a medical method of diagnostics for determination of authenticity of the signature of the artist and tracing of modifications of a picture of the years which happened over hundreds. The report on reception which is called the optical coherent tomography (OCT) for the first time is published in the monthly Notes of the Chemical Researches .

The Polish researcher Pyotr Targovski notes that in easel painting the cloth traditionally consists of several layers.

The artist, for example, at first applies the gluing structure on a cloth to provide good coupling with the top layers. These layers can include picture sketches, a picture, layers of translucent glaze and from above a transparent varnish.

Art critics and other experts use various ways and technologies for the analysis of underlying layers and identification of changes, including authenticity of autographs of the author of a picture and other made changes in a picture. But these ways can damage an author`s cloth or cannot be rather exact for definition of the thinnest details of cloths.

The scientific method described as an optical coherent tomography or in abbreviated form OCT uses the three-dimensional image of layers getting on a retina of eyes, for achievement of a goal - definition of structure of layers of a picture and other its characteristics, in particular authenticity of the put autographs. They used OCT for the analysis of two oil pictures 18 - go and 19 - go centuries.

In one picture Saint Leonard in Porto Maurizio by means of OCT found out that the autograph St. Leonard it was added on a canvas more than in 50 years after writing of a picture. In the picture Stranger`s Portrait by means of OCT scientists found that the autograph of the artist was possibly forged.

Now art critics and experts of the museums will receive in the hands powerful and very reliable tool of the analysis of ancient pictures and determination of their authenticity from what real artifacts of painting will become even more expensive at auctions.
